A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
