Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
