The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
